What is th point of voting for propositions?

It just seems like a giant waste of time and money for voters and the people running the campaign if a judge is just going to overturn the decision in the end. Our judicial system seems very flawed. It's pretty ridiculous. For example the whole proposition 8 thing in CA. The people voted for a ban on gay marriages with this proposition and now all of a sudden some judge comes out of nowhere and overturns the people's fair and square decision. Yeah it may seem like the law violates people's rights but then why were people allowed to vote on it and then p it in the first place? It just sounds so stupid to me.
