Police crime ref number?

a few weeks ago my friend was aulted and i was mugged by a group of 6 guys! my friend wasn't hurt at all really and neither was I, but it was my iphone that they mugged! i thought oh its fine it's insured! but at the time of the incident i was extremely drunk and when chasing the guys that took the phone, i wrongly shouted something racist! yes i know i was in the wrong! but police aren't pressing charges due to lack of evidence and allegations made against myself! my problem now is the police won't give me a crime reference number, which i was sure everything had a crime reference number? but the insurance company won't process the claim without one? where do i stand?
