How to introduce my dog to a kitten?

We have a 9 year old golden retriever and are considering getting a kitten. He's never actually met a cat before but gets really excited when he sees them. One time a neighbor cat was on our deck and we let him out to meet each other but as soon as he went near the cat the cat hissed and ran away. I don't think there would be a problem if he did meet a cat but i don't know. If you could just tell me a way to properly introduce them with out either of them feeling scared or threatened it would be great. thanks kc
